What is the Retina?
The retina is the inner lining of the eye. It is the light sensitive tissue that converts light to electrical signals which then travel through the optic nerve to the brain where they are converted into images. The macula is the central part of the retina that is responsible for detailed vision. It is the part of the retina that is used for reading, watching television, recognizing people’s faces and other detail. If the macula degenerates all these detailed tasks of vision are compromised and then daily life can be severely affected. Macular degeneration is a condition which occurs later in life hence the term Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD).
