George Morphis joined the team of Ophthalmology Consultants of the Victoria Eye Unit in the County Hospital in January 2013. He is a specialist cataract and vitreoretinal surgeon. He studied medicine at the National and Capodistrian University of Athens. He then trained in Internal Medicine at the Nassau University Medical Center (NY, USA). Following this, he had his core Ophthalmology training at the Red Cross General Hospital in Athens, Greece. He became a fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology in 2009 (FEBOphth, Paris).
In addition George Morphis had extensive Ophthalmology training at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where he had 2 fellowships:
Vitreoretinal Fellowship:
Entire range of vitreoretinal disorders and surgery. Vitrectomies using state-of-the-art latest equipment for
- retinal detachment repair
- macular hole surgery
- epiretinal membrane peeling
- vitrectomy for cataract complications and
- scleral buckle surgery which is the conventional method for retinal detachment repair.
Mr Morphis has also gained extensive experience in complex cataract surgery. This includes all cases where cataract surgery is not straightforward for different reasons including previous eye trauma causing traumatic cataracts or cases where the lens of the eye is unstable (i.e. pseudoexfoliation syndrome).
Medical Retina Fellowship:
Medical retinal conditions including:
- Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD): a condition affecting mostly elderly patients causing central visual loss
- Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) associated with long standing ophthalmic diabetic changes affecting vision
- Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) which is a condition associated with interruption of normal blood drainage from the back of the eye (retina)
- Other less common medical retina conditions (Central Serous Retinopathy, non-ARMD related choroidal neovascularization).
George Morphis has extensive experience treating all above conditions with the latest antiVascular Endothelial Growth Factor (antiVEGF) intravitreal injections or intraocular lasering or even retinal surgery in advanced cases.
He is happy to see both insured and uninsured patients with:
- all above conditions as well as,
- general ophthalmic conditions (dry eye, glaucoma)
- and to assess patients and offer cataract surgery with standard or premium intraocular lenses
Personal life:
George is married to Magda Peppa and they have two children (son and daughter). He enjoys cycling and swimming with his wife and children.
